Well said, Joe, and spot on. Tacking towards moderation and not being beholden to the fringe elements of the party, which Biden fell prey to, is the only way to compete against the extremism from the other side. Mamdani..we'll see how he governs NYC, a unique leadership lab and not reflective of the rest of the country, and in following the current incumbent he should not have too much trouble looking good! I sense more pragmatism in him, but time will tell.

I love Mayor Jim of Cedar Park with his slogan, boring meetings. Exciting outcomes!

I am genuinely interested in why you think Zohran Mamdani is not a pragmatist. How are you defining that term?

I don’t disagree with your point, but I guess it has more to do with the definition of what we think our monos goals versus bold goals. Many of the things that I’ve heard him talk about are noble, indeed in their pursuit, but in what it will take to actually come accomplish them requires very big and Beaul policy changes. I’m hopeful that he makes it better New York City. It’s already a great town, but it does leave room for improvement. That said it’s a very unique American experiment that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the United States. One small example, as it’s the only public transit system in America, that actually makes a profit nearly every other transit system in the United States barely breaks, even or actually loses, it has to require taxpayer subsidy

But I mean he ran on doable things: expanded childcare through higher taxes passed in Albany, freezing rent in rent-controlled apartments through a board he controls appointments to, free bus service, and some city-owned grocery stores. This stuff is only bold because of the opposition being concentrated among the powerful and wealthy.

Great question, and I don’t think I can answer it until after many of his policies start to be implemented. I’m a firm believer that if you’re gonna have a big vision but pragmatically you’ll have to scale it down when you meet reality. If indeed he does that with some of his bold initiatives, then I would call him pragmatic as well as a socialist. But I didn’t give him the label of socialist, he did. Which I think of today’s politics, even if you’re trying to help everyone, fall flat with a lot of people.

So you define it as seeking a less ambitious goal? But what if he just achieves his modest promises through politics as he says he will do? Why wouldn’t that be pragmatic?
